They served,
They fought,
They died,
and received neither their country's glory
nor their country's compassion.
Saigon fell to the Communist forces on April 30, 1975, bringing the end to the United States role in the Vietnam War. US advisors were first assigned to the Republic of South Vietnam on November 1, 1955 and as the war escalated troops would serve in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and in offshore waters as well.
During the war returning troops returned to a country unwilling to acknowledge the service, hardships, sacrifice, honor, and valor which had marked their experiences in war. The indifference and often hostility Vietnam Veterans face at home was often also found among the long established veterans service organizations found in their hometowns. Older veterans presented a cold shoulder to the new veterans. Few Vietnam Veterans found a welcome at home.
"Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another."
In 1978 a small group of Vietnam Veterans organized The Council of Vietnam Veterans which, by the next year, became Vietnam Veterans of America. VVA received a Charter from the United States Congress in 1986.
Today there are more than 600 local Chapters and a total members of around 90,000...and membership numbers are increasing.
